The Difference Between Design & Decorating

As an Interior Stylist & Decorator, I get this question a lot: “Isn’t that the same thing as an Interior Designer?” The short answer is no. But it’s a good question, and one worth answering properly.

An Interior Designer can advise on structural elements. Think moving walls, opening up a floorplan, picking tiles or kitchen benchtops, drawing up renovation plans, or project managing a build. That’s not what I do, though there are some amazing people who do it brilliantly, and I love collaborating with them when a project calls for it. What I do is bring guidance to the next layer: creating beautiful, personal spaces for my clients, once the bones of the home are sorted.

SO WHAT IS INTERIOR STYLING & DECORATING?

I’ve heard it explained like this, and I think it’s spot on: if you had a finished home and turned it upside down, everything that fell out is exactly what I help put together. Furniture, artwork, soft furnishings like cushions and throws, decor, accessories, curtains. There are a few exceptions to the “if it falls out” rule, like guiding paint colour and wallpaper selections but that’s the gist. These are the things I help my clients around Brisbane and surrounds source for their homes, and it’s where a house genuinely starts to feel like it belongs to the people living in it.

DOES THAT MEAN I SPEND MOST OF MY TIME SHOPPING?

You’d think so, but sourcing is only part of it. A lot of the magic actually happens before I ever step foot in a showroom. Home styling and decorating is a process, not just a series of purchases, and it’s a process built around getting to know you, not just your Pinterest board.

I help with space planning and room layout, guide colour direction and build out a palette, help you uncover your style vision, and put together moodboards to steer decision-making. I advise on paint, wallpaper, and lighting — think of me as your personal styling coach, there to help you avoid decision-overwhelm and make choices with confidence rather than second-guessing every step. Part of that is understanding how you actually live in your home, not just what you like the look of, because a space that photographs well but doesn’t suit your life will never feel quite right.

I can also coordinate the project itself, which is often the most stressful part: liaising with suppliers, tracking deliveries and warranties, chasing up the details so you don’t have to. And I’ll help you edit what’s already in your space, working out what to keep, what to let go of, and where a little more personality could go a long way to making your space truly feel like you.

At the end, we pull all the styling together so your home feels like you, complete and ready to enjoy. Not a showroom, not a copy of someone else’s Instagram feed but the backdrop to your actual life.

So if you’re ready for your home to reflect your personal style, or maybe it’s just time for a refresh (no hammers required), let’s chat! I’d love to be your coach, helping you create personal spaces with confidence.
